In 1976, Rufus Benton, developed a process to produce the lamella-tipped doctor blade without grinding which virtually eliminated breakage of blade edges. The blade is produced utilizing a unique proprietary chemical reduction method that does not change the properties of the steel. The result is a doctor blade that many printers feel exceeds the performance of the standard ground products in the market.
In 1978, Benton Graphics introduced the Type F blade, patent number #4,895,071. This two-part blade integrates the backup blade with the wiping blade, providing repeatable setups from one run to another, while saving time.
In 2000, with its continuing commitment to research and development, Benton Graphics assembled an international core group of leading-edge technology companies, along with some of the world's experts in high performance carbon and tool steels. The combined effort of this group resulted in Microloy® Steel and the Ultimeter®, patent #6,632,301, line of doctor blades. By using raw material with carefully controlled microlloying, ultra clean chemistry and ultra fine grain structure, Benton Graphics is able to produce a unique doctor blade that out performs standard steel blades at a reasonable cost. Ultimeter® blades have better wear resistance which results in longer runs and reduced downtime.
